You heard it here first. After watching her performance the day after the convention, I warned the McCain braintrust to let Sarah be Sarah or they would extinguish the fire we all felt after watching her acceptance speech. It looks like they have her now in a straightjacket, fearful of saying something not scripted for her. I know Sarah is not scared of the likes of Katie Couric or that buffoon from ABC whose name I have already forgotten. But she looks scared nonetheless because she is afraid of offending McCain's moderate script writers. They are turning America's latest folk hero into a fading shadow of her former self.
The last thing America wants is another candidate polished in Washingtonspeak. They want someone fresh and not afraid to speak her mind. Apparently she is too conservative for the milquetoasts who coached McCain into near silence on the big bailout issue when it came up in the debate. McCain could have scored a knockout if he had only spoken up strongly in favor of taxpayers like Senators Shelby and Bunning did. Now McCain is in danger of losing conservatives like me who were going to vote for a third party candidate until Palin came along.
It would be better if Sarah's true conservatism rubbed off on McCain rather than his fence-sitting personality rub off on her. Apparently she is too much of a maverick for the McCain camp. Of course she can't be directly contradicting McCain on the campaign trail, but let her speak her mind and use her own words. We want to hear what the Governor of Alaska has to say not what a bunch of political hack insiders have scripted for her.
If the real Sarah Palin reemerges in Thursday's debate, McCain will regain momentum and achieve a stirring victory. If the scared puppet shows up, Heaven help us all.
