If Sarah Palin had performed at the Convention the way she performed in Cedarville, Wisconsin the next day, she would either be off the ticket or Obama, instead of preparing his next stump speech, would be rehearsing for his swearing-in ceremony. The contrast between St. Paul Sarah and Cedarville Sarah was scary. It was as though Sarah had been scolded for ad-libbing too much during her dazzling Wednesday night performance. On Thursday she seemed like she was afraid to take her finger off the lines she was READING, the same lines she had delivered the night before as though they were her own or had been memorized.
Perhaps campaign managers are afraid that Sarah will make McCain look pale by comparison. Or maybe they just don't have the confidence in her that most of us fans do. But if they turn confident Sarah into puppet Sarah, they will be turning the enthusiasm Sarah ignited at the convention into ashes.
Let Sarah be Sarah.
